Some of my favorite places

Yosemite national park
I have enjoyed hiking Half Dome, Clouds Rest, Mount Hoffman and Lembert Dome. I can highly recommend the book "Yosemite National Park:A Natural-History Guide to Yosemite and Its Trails" by Jeffrey P. Schaffer. I did most of the above hikes in the months of September and October.

Los Padres National Park : Ventana Wilderness
A most beautiful place with the added benefit of being lightly used compared with other more popular parks. Avoid the interior in the summers though - I learned the hard way. I have hiked Junipero Serra Peak (pic, pic), Mt Manuel (pic), Cone Peak and several loops. Bring your own water if you visit the interior in the fall.

The Lost Coast / Sinkyone Wilderness
This is the area around Shelter Cove CA - very pretty and it does not get much use. Lots of narrow dirt roads so it's not for the faint of heart as far as driving goes. I have hiked the lightening trail to King Peak and some of the Lost Coast trail. Accommodations (other than camping) and restaurants are very limited in this area.

Emergency communication in the wilderness

If you like to visit remote areas and often go alone, you might want to consider obtaining an amateur radio license and carrying a small two way radio for use during emergencies. Cellular phones are probably the next best alternative, involving more cost but less training investment. See my amateur radio page.
