When a Friend Becomes a Lover

To further cloak these emotions inside me
Would be a crime against nature's universal decree
Promising eternal truth and respect to the one
Who has been closer to you than almost anyone.

But there is another edict which I had followed
And to my bitter disappointment it had not allowed
For two friends to become anything more,
And to obey this forever I solemnly swore.

On the one hand I needed to release all my emotions
But I could not disobey my everlasting devotions.
For years I had suffered trying to decide
To tell you my feelings or to die otherwise.

Finally my heart burned to tell you so,
And now I must let all my convictions go:
You are the one who overwhelms my mind;
To everyone else I have been totally blind.

Obsessed some call this disease of mine
But all I want is with you to spend some time.
To feel you all around inside and out,
And to keep you always without a doubt

That I am the one who will be true to you;
The troubles of life I will help you through.
Love has only one meaning in my little world
And it has your name on the flag unfurled.
