QUAIL '97 (Question of the Day)

> What is 'fuzzy' logic? Is it a probabilistic method of reasoning? Is
> it uncertain reasoning at all?

PEDRITO'S ANSWER:

fuzzy logic is an attempt to quantify degrees of truth. in this way it
differs from both classical logic and probabilistic logic in that these
logics assume binary values for truth. although probabilistic theory also
addresses degrees, its concern is with the likelihood of a sentence being
true or not, rather than the sentence's degree of "trueness". fuzzy
logic's has proven very useful for dealing with ambiguous natural language
categories such as "tall", "warm", and "red".
