Course Readers

There are no bound readers for the class. Documentation for the software will be available in the downloadable bundle, and there will be occasional handouts. For students who want or need more of a background on the issues involved in designing adaptive learning guides, see the course reading list from the previous class, Design of Adaptive Learning Guides on the Bibliography of Course Readings page.

Software

We will be using Extempo's Imp software to build our characters. It will be available for download to your computer. The software requires Windows 95/98/NT to run.

Hardware

Two PCs in the KSL public area of the Gates Building will be available for student use, in case you do not have access to a Windows machine of your own. Please check with Patrick for access.

Course Requirements

All students are expected to:

  • Attend every class (or provide a good reason why you are absent)
  • Participate in class discussions and analyses

All groups are expected to:

  • Send weekly email to instructors, due Sundays at midnight, listing
    • What your group accomplished that week
    • Topics your group would like to discuss in class next week (including any techniques that you discovered, problems that you had, etc.)
    • Whether or not you would like to present your Guide in class next week (and why or why not)
  • Keep an up-to-date copy of your Guide uploaded on the Web site
  • Be prepared to show and talk about your character each week (though not every group will talk each week)

Grading Policy

Grades are determined as follows:

  • 50% -- objectively measurable features of your Learning Guide
  • 40% -- achievement in your group's chosen area of emphasis on your Guide
  • 10% -- final presentation and design document

Final Exam

Instead of an examination, each group will give a presentation during the final exam period (Friday, March 23rd, 12:15-3:15). You will briefly summarize your design choices and then illustrate them with a live demonstration of your Learning Guide in action.

The other part of the final is to give us a final version of your design document. You will have written original and revised versions early in class, and they should be updated to reflect any changes in design that occurred while you were working. This document is to be submitted at the beginning of the exam period.
