State quarters series might grow to 11 years

Legislation is expected to be introduced in January calling on Congress to allow citizens in the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands and American Samoa to participate in the 50 State Circulating Commemorative Coin Program.

Reps. Eleanor Holmes North, D-D.C., along with Eni F.H. Faleomavaega, D-American Samoa; Robert Underwood, D-Guam; Carlos Romero-Barcelo, D-Puerto Rico; and Donna N. Christian-Green, D-Virgin Islands, are planning to introduce legislation which would essentially add an 11th year to the 10-year commemorative program approved by Congress in early November.

Both the House and Senate 50 State Circulating Commemorative Coin bills included a provision to allow any states admitted into the Union before the end of the 10-year period to issue circulating commemorative quarter dollars after the 50 states have had their coins issued.
