Objective
I seek to create software that delights users, working in a challenging and
healthy environment. At this point in my career, I'm more interested in the
social value of a project than the potential profit.
Summary
I started out developing OOP C++ applications at a very small shop. We did
a few web projects, which led to a job at a small appserver company, eventually
purchased by Netscape. I've created C++ and Java database backed web applications
for some projects, and developed Java Swing applications as add on tools for
other projects. In my most recent stint with Escalate I've advanced to the
Architect role, doing whatever job large or small needed to get the product
up and working on our production site. I'm confident in my ability to take
a complex project from blank slate through design to shipped application.
Experience
Architect & Software Design Engineer, Escalate. 5/99 - present.
An early employee at Escalate, I've played many roles, including: architect,
tech lead, programmer, sales engineer, and deployment engineer. Escalate
hosts a web storefront application, as well as web based tools to create
and manage the storefront, process orders, route orders to suppliers, manage
the order lifecycle by customer service representatives and suppliers, etc.
This highly interrelated set of applications is developed and maintained
by a team of over 30 engineers. I've been a key engineer working on all levels
of the project: servlets and jsps, object and ER modeling, python scripts,
plsql, xml, etc. As tech lead I shaped the application's Model/View/Controller
structure. As architect I initiated and led a project to refactor the entire
system, successfully improving product quality as well as employee morale.
I introduced the team to patterns, UML, extreme programming and other methodologies.
Software Engineer, Kiva Software & Netscape. 11/96 - 5/99. Netscape
acquired Kiva, 11/97.
Defined, architected, implemented & shipped Java applications for two
products: Netscape Extension Builder and Netscape Application Server for
R/3. Both were tools added onto versions of Netscape Application Server,
the original Kiva product. Both tools were implemented using Java Swing.
NEB provided a graphical interface to a code generation tool for extensions
to the server. The R/3 product allowed users to browse SAP objects and generate
proxy code to those objects.
Consulted at Internet Shopping Network for 6 months to create their First
Auction database-backed web application. Defined First Auction application,
an auction site designed to sell surplus HSN inventory. Taught ISN team about
the Kiva server, implemented various C++ modules supporting the application.
Added features to the core Kiva server.
Software Engineer, Integrated Business Software. 4/95 - 11/96.
Architected, implemented & shipped online catalog viewer used by the
door and window industry. Developed the catalog for Windows 3.1 in Borland
C++ using OWL, an object library superior to MFC.
Other projects included Perl CGI scripts for an intranet reporting application,
and SiteMap, a Windows graphical database of hazardous waste sites.
Teaching Fellow & Teaching Assistant, Computer Science, Stanford
University, 4/92 - 4/95.
Instructor for accelerated introductory software engineering course, CS106x.
Prepared and delivered weekly lectures; directed staff; created assignments,
grading criteria, and exams. Teaching assistant for various introductory
computer science classes.
Education
M.S. in Computer Science, Stanford University, April 1995. Concentration
in Human Computer Interaction.
B.S. in Computer Science, Stanford University, June 1992.
Honors
Centennial Teaching Award, 1995. Tau Beta Pi, 1992. National Merit Scholar,
1988.
Interests
Avid reader, training for a marathon, weaknesses for bridge and Settlers
of Catan.
