Map generation experiments for Realm of the Mad God

30 Jan 2010

In 2010 I made some map generators for Realm of the Mad God. The main one that I released to the public is on another page[1]. I made some variants that I didn’t make public, but am doing so in 2024. I am using the Ruffle[2] emulator to run Flash, since browsers no longer support the Flash plugin.

Mapgen 1; click on the minimap on the left to see the main map; also see blog post[3]
Temple ruins generator for procgen event system; reload to see a new one (a little inconvenient with the web version but worked nicely back in the flash days)
A version of mapgen1 which animated water by rotating and animating the tiles; click on the minimap on the left to see different areas; we never used this
A version of mapgen1 which smoothed the tiles so it wouldn’t look blocky; we never used this but I wrote blog post[4]
Me learning how to turn perlin noise maps into islands (of the things I wanted in mapgen1)
A version of mapgen1 with smoothed tiles, but also an overall island shape
A version of mapgen2 with roads and lava
A version of mapgen2 with a different implementation of the “2D slopes” view
Some dungeon ideas I was playing with — perspective walls, key/door mechanics, and fluids covering rooms; reload to see a new one
